In the Meantime

Paul wrote the book of Philippians as a letter to the church at Philippi as an
encouragement to them to remain joyful, united, humble, and faithful to
Christ despite their suffering and opposition both inside and outside the
church. Paul wrote this letter while in prison awaiting a trial with an
outcome that could mean his execution and yet 19 times in the epistle, Paul
speaks of his joy.

Both Paul and the church in Philippi found themselves “in the meantime” or
that time between two events or seasons. Paul encouraged them to
remember the past and keep their eyes on the future, but not at the
expense of the present or meantime. He encourages the church to pursue
spiritual maturity, to stand firm in their faith, and to live with peace,
contentment, and generosity with Christ as their source of joy.

At Western Hills Church, we too are in the meantime or interim time
between seasons of ministry. We want to honor the past while keeping our
eyes on the future, but we can’t miss what God has for us in the present or
meantime. “The Meantime” is not a time to coast or wait. It is instead the
threshold of what is to come that is built on the foundation of where we
have come from. Paul wrote it this way, “I am sure of this, that he who
started a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of
Christ Jesus.”
