What is The Giant Slayers Ministry?

"Giant Slayers" is the name of the Preteen Ministry program at Western Hills. It has a name that the teens can identify with, get excited about, and promote with their friends.

Why is it called Giant Slayers?

The kids themselves selected this name based upon a very engaging lesson that they learned about David and Goliath two years ago. The students embraced two important truths from the lesson found in 1 Samuel 17. The first lesson is that David is not the true hero in the story. God is! The second is that each of us will face our own "giants" in life and in our spiritual walk.

What we do in the Preteen ministry?

We have Sunday morning classes each week at 9:00 a.m. We encourage preteens to stay and attend the worship service at 10:30. Preteens are provided with Sermon Notes handouts to assist them with keeping track of important points and writing down questions that come up during the sermon. It is possible that we will have a Wednesday night activity beginning this fall, but those details are still being worked out. In addition, we also have a yearly retreat, special events, parties, a Mission Trip, and local service activities.

Where do we meet?

"Giant Slayers" meet in the South end of the building at Stone Zone, a.k.a. The Crate Room. It serves as our general meeting space as well as our classroom. It is called the The Stone Zone because it is the center of the preteen ministry program. It’s where we come together and from where we go out into the world.

Are Giant Slayers Ministries separate from the rest of the Children’s Ministry at Western Hills?

"Giant Slayers Ministries" is simply an identity for the preteen program and does not promote a separation of any kind from the rest of the Children’s Ministry. In fact, the preteens are encouraged to get involved in the other aspects of church as well as Giant Slayers activities. An important part of our philosophy is that the preteens are members and assets of the church NOW and need to be willing to take an active role. The one difference between Giant Slayers and the rest of Children's Ministry is that the kids no longer need to check in and receive a security tag when they arrive!

Parent Information

We have one big Parent Meeting and several mini-meetings each year. It’s important that parents attend these meetings for several reasons. First, parents will get a glance of the coming events/activities/lesson themes. Second, there is an opportunity to sign up as a sponsor for Giant Slayers activities/events. Third, you can take the opportunity to ask any questions they might have. And finally, we give out door prizes.

The mini-meetings are planned for the 2nd Sunday of every other month. They will occur between services at 10:00 a.m. in the Stone Zone. Meetings will be held in October, December, February & April.
